Our third subscription concert in this series takes us on an Advent journey to Vienna in the period of Classicism and Early Romanticism, when the city came to the forefront as a leading European centre for music, attracting composers from many different parts of Europe. Our programme features works by composers with close cultural links to Vienna, including a Czech connection which persisted in this part of the former Habsburg dynasty for centuries.

The concert opens with a lively overture written in 1812 by Franz Schubert, a lifelong admirer of the work of Beethoven. This is followed by the last of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s five violin concertos, whose popularity stems partly from its use of Turkish-style musical elements which Austrian audiences found highly pleasing. Playing the work tonight is Czech Philharmonic Concertmaster Jan Fišer. Our final piece is the only symphony by the Vamberk-born composer Jan Václav Hugo Voříšek, who made his name in Vienna as a composer, conductor, organist and highly respected teacher.
