This Subscription Series A concert in our post-Easter programme consists entirely of Czech works, when the Bohuslav Martinů Philharmonic under its Chief Conductor Robert Kružík plays the overture to the glorious historic tableau about the wise judgement, wedding and prophesy of the mythical Czech princess, composed by Bedřich Smetana, born exactly 200 years earlier.
This is followed by the Zlín premiere of the Trombone Concerto by Ivan Zelenka, a contemporary composer, conductor and musician, and it is performed for us by Robert Kozánek, the winner of many international performing competitions.
Tonight’s concert concludes with Josef Bohuslav Foerster’s 4th Symphony, a work imbued with deep belief in the suffering and resurrection of Christ. The piece, to some extent a reminiscence of the composer’s childhood when he spent the Easter holidays in Osenice in the Jičín area, begins by taking the listener along the Stations of the Cross, before returning them to their carefree childhood, followed by a deeply contemplative section leading up to the concluding Triumph of Easter Saturday announcing the resurrection of the Saviour on the third day.
