It is on the eve of Good Friday that four outstanding soloists and the Czech Philharmonic Choir Brno come together with the Bohuslav Martinů Philharmonic Orchestra to perform Antonín Dvořák’s Stabat Mater Oratorio for Soloists, Choir and Orchestra. An emotionally intense work written in 1877 and one of the most artistically compelling in its genre, it is monumental in scope, nobly reverent, musically refined yet down to earth in its humility as a representation in music of the Middle Ages Latin text portraying the suffering of a mother whose son is dying on the cross. The piece stands as the composer’s intimate depiction of human grief and hope, expressing the very deepest of feelings, its existence and thematic depth arising out of the composer’s painful experience of the death in infancy of three of his children - a cathartic coming-to-terms with this heavy blow, but at the same time affirming the composer’s reverential sense of devotion and unflagging belief in life.
The work, in ten movements of extraordinary intensity, musicality, colour and vividness, passes from a picture of death and suffering through grief and painful reflection to final deliverance and eventual reconciliation. At the podium tonight is our Chief Conductor Robert Kružik.
