The Smetana Trio, founded in 1934 by the legendary Czech pianist Josef Páleníček, is one of today’s most prestigious Czech ensembles whose current members carry forward the ideal created by their predecessors, but also by other important soloists of the 20th century who came together in chamber music such as Oistrakh, Rostropovich, Richter; Stern, Rose, and Istomin. The current members of the Trio - all three prominent Czech soloists in their own right - demonstrate that a top-quality performing group owes its success to the consummate ability of its musicians.

This Smetana Trio concert is part of our celebration of the Year of Czech Music while also marking the 90th anniversary of the founding of this prestigious ensemble, which has rightly earned its place among the most renowned ensembles of its type today. The Trio perform regularly at major events in this country, such as the Prague Spring Festival, the Janáček May Festival, the Moravian Autumn Festival, Concentus Moraviae and so on, but also abroad in France, Germany, Switzerland, Great Britain, Italy, Slovenia, and Croatia, for example, where they are keen to promote Czech music and its reputation. With many prestigious awards to their credit, such as the BBC Music Magazine Chamber Choice, Diapason d'Or, Le Monde de la musique, and others, the Trio tonight present an all-Czech programme of works by Suk, Smetana and Dvořák, enabling us to welcome renowned musicians spreading awareness of Czech music abroad, and to celebrate this country’s rich musical history.
