After ten years as a soloist with the Bohuslav Martinů Philharmonic Orchestra, Vojtech Szabó presents his brand new fiery project Strings & Bellows Ensemble to his home audience. Turning 40 years old on 16 November, he views this concert as a birthday celebration and will record the entire concert as a live DVD recording and quintet CD entitled Fiesta 1984.
The performance, Szabó says, features numbers full of energy, emotion and virtuosity, including Adiós Nonino, written in the Depression for Vincent Nonino's father, the dreamy Milonga del Ángel, and the most famous energetic Libertango. Szabó has also written two new pieces especially for this concert - Fiesta 1984 and Czech 09, and the Strings & Bellows ensemble will bring us unique arrangements with their distinctive improvisation and classical and jazz elements, as we hear in their performance of Astor Piazzolla’s phenomenal Tango Nuevo.
The Ensemble is led by the acclaimed accordionist Vojtech Szabó, one of the best in Europe. A graduate of the Bratislava Conservatory under Nada Varínská, he has been teaching since 2009, when he also founded the Tango Argentino trio, and a year later he began performing with the Bohuslav Martinů Philharmonic Orchestra in Zlín and the Czech National Symphony Orchestra, with whom he plays as a soloist. He has also been working with the Pražský Výběr band for 11 years, and in 2014 he was a special guest on Pavel Šporcl's CD Gipsy Fire and the subsequent tour to the CD - Gipsy Fire Generali Tour 2014. In 2018 he released his debut album Vojtech Szabó: Play Accordion, followed by the jazz album Szabotage (2020). He played the accordionist in the big screen movie The Adventurers (2017) starring Jean Reno. Although he is mainly involved in jazz, French and Argentinian music, he also appeals to pop and rock audiences with his progressive style and electric accordion playing. In addition to performing, he also mentors young accordionists and gives educational concerts.
