Wafting through our programme tonight is the aroma of jazz, when a quartet headed up by award-winning pianist Karel Košárek perform pieces on the musical borderline between jazz and classical.

The French composer, arranger, pianist and conductor Claude Bolling developed an interest in jazz at the age of 14, going on to study harmony with Maurice Duruflé and counterpoint with André Hodeir. His great role model and friend was Duke Ellington. Bolling toured and recorded with leading jazz figures such as Buck Clayton, Bill Coleman, Roy Eldridge, Albert Nicholas and Lionel Hamton, and as a highly talented arranger, he has worked with the likes of Mireille Mathieu, Liza Minnelli and Brigitte Bardot. He has won the Grand Prix du Disque several times. His Suite for Flute and Piano is for "classical" flute and jazz piano, so the two parts are written in quite different styles, allowing the players the opportunity to bring out the differences between "classical" and jazz performance.

The French flautist, composer and arranger Raymond Guiot studied flute at the Paris Conservatoire in 1947, going on to win the prestigious international competition in Geneva in 1954, and was solo flautist at the Paris Opera. He has been actively involved in jazz all his life, working with top musicians including Quincy Jones, Duke Ellington, Baden Powell and Martial Solal. He dedicated his compositions Rhapsodies and Paraphrases on Gershwin's popular The Man I Love to Alain Marion, one of the finest flautists of the 20th century.

This evening's programme also presents pieces by Ástor Piazzolla, master of the bandoneon and the new tango.
