Traditions are meant to be observed, especially at Christmas, and what would Christmas be without Jakub Jan Ryba’s legendary Czech Christmas Mass! First heard in the choir of the Rožmitál church more than 200 years ago, this work usually features as the highlight of the Bohuslav Martinů Philharmonic's Christmas concert, and this year is no different.
This iconic part of the Czech Christmas was first performed by what was then the Zlín Symphony Orchestra in December 1970 in the former Arts Centre, and since then it has been an almost annual fixture in the Zlín Philharmonic’s schedule, making it a firmly established tradition.
Also closely linked with the magic of Christmas is E. T. A. Hoffmann's story about Clara, the Mouse King, snowflakes and the wooden Nutcracker with the even better known music by Tchaikovsky. Completing this evening's programme is Prokofiev's Troika, a spectacular orchestral picture of galloping horses pulling a sleigh through the snowy landscape.
Don't miss this unique concert that is sure to put you in the Christmas spirit!
