The common denominator of tonight's concert is the melodies and rhythms of Spain.
Édouard Lalo's Symphonie Espagnole in five movements, though bearing the characteristics of a symphony, is to all intents and purposes a violin concerto. It was written for the celebrated violinist Pablo de Sarasate and first performed in Paris in the heyday of musical interest in the colour of Spain in its many forms, with Georges Bizet's opera Carmen making its appearance just a month later.
It was the songs of Andalusia that inspired Manuel de Falla's ballet, which tells the story of the ill-fated love of the gypsy girl Candela. Also from the world of ballet comes Bolero, whose composer Ravel can hardly have foreseen the future success and popularity of his work.
The Messaggio for violin and orchestra was written by one of the foremost Czech composers Sylvie Bodorová, whose work is performed both in this country and abroad.
The soloist in both tonight's violin compositions is the highly respected virtuoso Ivan Ženatý, who has been teaching at the Cleveland Institute of Music in the US since 2012. For the 2013 – 2014 season he has been commissioned as artist in residence with the FOK Prague Symphony Orchestra.
