The French composer Erik Satie also played the harmonium at the famous Paris cabaret Le Chat Noir, which was frequented by the cream of society including well known and celebrated artists. His works are played only rarely, and although he was admired by the following generation of composers, it is only recently that his particular musical idiom has come to be recognised.

George Gershwin wrote classical music, but also gained recognition for his popular music and above all musicals such as Oh, Kay!, Strike Up the Band, Funny Face, Girl Crazy and Lady Be Good, and we will hear a selection of these and other songs sung by our soloist Marie Fajtová from the Prague National Theatre.
Scott Joplin, another American composer and exceptional pianist, made ragtime famous and also left a legacy in the form of his opera Treemonisha.

Astor Piazzolla moved as a young boy from his native Argentina to New York, where he worked with many well-known jazz artists. His concerto for accordion, which mixes Latin American rhythms with jazz, is played by Vojtech Szabó.

Our guide on this concert journey from cabaret and ragtime via the musical to tango nuevo is the conductor Vojtěch Spurný.
