Is there any more traditional Christmas fairytale in the realm of Czech cinema than director Václav Vorlíček's film Three Wishes for Cinderella (Tři oříšky pro Popelku)?
Unbelievably, almost half a century has passed since the making of this Czech-German co-production film with screenwriting by František Pavlíček, but in spite of time, this remarkable picture has remained high in the popularity stakes for decades and across the generations. Three Wishes for Cinderella is a truly special tale to the point of being a national treasure, not so much for the storyline, which has been filmed in many different versions, but primarily because of its modernity, humour, magical winter setting, fine acting, and not least the legendary music of Karel Svoboda. No wonder, then, that the film has been so successful both in this country and abroad, making it a Christmas classic in a number of European countries.
This innovative musical venture, a perfect match between the big screen and a live symphony orchestra, promises to be an unforgettable fairytale evening for young and old alike.
The Bohuslav Martinů Philharmonic is conducted by Jan Chalupecký.
