Riotous Ravel, refined Falla with the cantaora Bella Adamova, scintillating Debussy, and  Rimsky-Korsakov in dance mode with  Alborada del gracioso, El amor brujo, Ibéria, and Capriccio espagnol. The titles of these pieces alone are enough to tell us that tonight’s late November concert sees the Orchestra unfurl a multi-coloured musical canvas depicting the land of passionate corrida and flamenco, a canvas stretched over the fiery flame of a scorching sun, spattered with unrestrainable emotion and interwoven with the distinctive sound of the guitar and castanets.

The musical tradition of Spain has produced a series of fascinating composers, but never quite in the numbers and quality seen in the main European cultures. But the folk music and dance of Spain have captivated many even well beyond that country’s borders, so it is no surprise that several composers have found their inspiration in Spanish music and culture, a culture that is close in terms of distance, but so exotic in its sounds, as tonight’s concert clearly demonstrates.
