Jan Martiník, bass
David Mareček, piano

The talented young bass Jan Martiník was a member of the Komische Oper Berlin from 2008-2011, and since 2012 he has been engaged with the Berlin Unter den Linden State Opera. He is a laureate of the Elena Obraztsova International Competition, where the won a special prize for the best performance of a Tchaikovsky romance. In 2007 he was a finalist in Placido Domingo´s "Operalia" competition and also in the Cardiff Singer of the World in 2009.

David Mareček has performed as a soloist and chamber musician in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria, Germany, France and Finland. As a soloist he has appeared with a number of Czech orchestras, becoming Director of the Brno Philharmonic in 2007, and Director-General of the Czech Philharmonic in February 2011.

Franz Schubert wrote his Winterreise after Müller's poems in 1827, when he was 30 years old, and shortly before he died. This cycle became not only the foundation of the celebrated tradition of the German Romantic Lied, but also a prominent feature of the repertoire of the great singers of the world. The work consists of 24 short poems on nostalgia, solitude, defiance and resignation as a sort of intimate diary of a man betrayed by love, who comes to an understanding of who he is on a journey through the winter countryside. The songs were originally written for tenor and piano.
